A seven-week residency at Modern Art Oxford, 2017
In 2017 Mandala Theatre Company worked with eleven young people from diverse backgrounds during a seven-week residency at Modern Art Oxford, responding to work by artist Lubaina Himid in her exhibition, Invisible Strategies.
Led by Mandala’s artistic director Yasmin Sidhwa, the young people created their own monologues on the theme of identity, culminating in a promenade performance in April 2017. The residency involved devised theatre, role play, creative writing and other exercises to help the actors create, write and perform their monologues.
The artist, Lubaina Himid, is one of the pioneers of the British Black Arts Movement. Her work challenges the stereotypical depictions of black figures in art history, foregrounding the contribution of the African diaspora to Western culture.
