In 2017 we completed a seven-week residency at Modern Art Oxford, responding to work by artist Lubaina Himid in her exhibition, Invisible Strategies, see picture above.
Eleven young people from diverse backgrounds took part led by Mandala artistic director Yasmin Sidhwa. Creating their own monologues on the theme of identity, they took part in a promenade performance in April 2017.
The residency used devised theatre, role play, creative writing and other exercises to help the young actors create, write and perform their monologues. The artist, Lubaina Himid, is one of the pioneers of the British Black Arts Movement. Her work challenges the stereotypical depictions of black figures in art history, foregrounding the contribution of the African diaspora to Western culture.
