Atiha Sen Gupta
Writer in residence
Atiha Sen Gupta is writer-in-residence for 2016-2017 at Theatre Royal Stratford East, where her play Counting Stars was produced in 2016. In the same year, she won the International Achievement Recognition Awards (IARA) Award for Best Playwright and was shortlisted for a Freedom of Expression award by Amnesty International.
In 2009, when she was just 21, her debut play What Fatima Did premiered at the Hampstead Theatre to critical acclaim. In 2014, her play about police racism, State Red, was produced at the Hampstead Downstairs. Atiha followed up with Counting Stars, which played at the Edinburgh Fringe 2015 and on the main stage of the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2016. She also writes for television, in 2009, co-writing “Noami”, an episode of Skins as well as co-writing episodes of Holby City.
